With Ghostbusters sequel chatter abuzz since 1989′s Ghostbusters II, recent news of star Dan Aykroyd’s script for Ghostbusters III just waiting for the production green light has fans wondering if Bill Murray will reprise his role as the wise-cracking buster-of-ghosts, Dr. Peter Venkman. Co-star Sigourney Weaver has been the most outspoken of the cast-to-be, stating that if Murray didn’t sign up for it, none of the other familiar cast would either.
Not that Murray needs the role or the inevitable cash cow that the ghostbusters franchise will inevitably become, but perhaps knowing that all the gang were ready to go zap some ghouls, he’d happily strap on his proton pack one more time. If Murray is doubting the franchise’s appeal in todays cinema, the litmus test will surely be the re-release of the original movies this month, just in time for Halloween. If cinema-goers react positively and 80′s nostalgia works its wonders, Murray may have one less reason to protest.
In the meantime, Ghostbusters fans and 80′s nostalgia heads alike will be waiting on the rumor mill which Aykroyd has no problem spinning. Recently hinting that ‘Scary Movie’s Anna Farris and ‘Paul’s Bill Hader were cast hopefuls. Both claimed ignorance.
